Ceramic vs Tourmaline vs Titanium: Which straightener should you choose?

It’s important to get a good quality hair straightener in order to keep your hair in perfect condition and avoid damaging it.

The market is currently overflown with different devices - each one claims to be perfect and fulfill your dreams. But not all are the same - you need to be picky and consider the actual characteristics of each one so you can choose the best for your hair. And the most important feature of each hair styler is the plates’ material.

Very often you hear the words “Ceramic”, “Tourmaline” and “Titanium”.

But what is the difference?

0. The Aluminium

Long ago, in the Stone Age of the Flat Iron production, all the plates were made of Aluminium

This metal is an excellent conductor of heat, plus it’s light and not very expensive, so it was the obvious choice for the production.

However, it had one major drawback - With regular use it was very damaging for the hair and it was making the hair dry and prone to breakage.

Nowadays only the lowest quality hair straighteners are made just from Aluminium

In the higher quality devices it’s only used as the base for the plates - due to its heat transfer qualities - and then it’s coated by one or more layers of other materials.

  1. Ceramic -  It is a non-metallic, inorganic material that produces negative ions. This technology (ionization) closes the hair follicles to achieve smooth, silky results. It heats up quickly and distributes heat evenly. Ceramic flat irons/hair straighteners glide through the hair without pulling or tugging, meaning less damage from snags or breakage. Common ceramic flat irons are made of aluminum or titanium plates, coated with ceramic. More expensive and higher quality ceramic irons are made of full ceramic plates (Like our best-seller, The Black Ceramic).

However, ceramic doesn’t reach such high temperatures as the tourmaline and the titanium flat irons, which could be considered good and bad, depending on your hair:

  • They are the most gentle and are much less likely to burn your hair.
  • If you have very thick or coarse hair they might not be enough or they’ll require more time to achieve the results you can get with a tourmaline or titanium iron.

  1. Tourmaline

It’s a crystalline mineral that is produced organically and used to coat the plates of a flat iron. This precious-gemstone can produce six times more negative ions than ceramic. “It’s often infused into Ceramic and Titanium plates to produce even straighter, shinier results.”- Folica.com. When the negative ions from the iron come in contact with the positive ions of dry hair, the result is a neutral charge, which lays the cuticle flat for glassy, frizz-free hair.

Golden Curl’s tourmaline Pro stylers use exactly this technology - The plates are made of tourmaline infused ceramics (ceramics are in the form of an “oil”).

3. Titanium

The titanium is the latest technology for the styling  devices.

It has two significant benefits:

  • Fastest heat transfer for immediate and superior results, regardless of the hair’s condition.
  • Durability, resistance, suitable for heavy salon usage, less for daily usage

However, keep in mind that the faster and more durable results might be more damaging if your hair is very fine or damaged from coloring. And of course, those type of plates are the most expensive. In a hair salon, a professional stylist needs fast, very durable results on their clients and the titanium is the best choice.

The Golden Curl Glam collection is made with Tourmaline - titanium technology. This means the power of titanium is combined with the negative - ion technology of the Tourmaline , which makes the hair extra shiny, smooth and silky. It is also coated with ceramic oil for additional protection.

In conclusion: What should you chose?

0. Aluminium - No, please don’t do this to your hair. Ever.

1. Ceramic - If you have dry, thin or damaged hair, which needs some extra love and protection, this is the best choice. A professional stylist should always have this option for their clients.

2. Tourmaline - if you want to use the device daily and you have normal to coarse hair, this will be the perfect one for you!

3. Titanium - If you have medium to coarse hair, which is not damaged, you will love this option. Your hair will be silky, smooth and shiny for days.

Also if you are a professional stylist and you need a durable device to achieve fast, long lasting results - get a titanium styler, you won’t regret it!
